I am glad you had the sense to put some fly mesh inside. I rescued my nearly dying tomato, planted it in my diy selfwatering earth bucket... and it seems to have slowly come to life again...at the moment it is being treated with a lot of TLC. Just a waiting game now...summer is over but still a bit of warm weather about to help decide its fate. Can't hurry nature. The buckets I bought, which once held mayonaise, were from our local fish and chip shop for $2 each, and obviously therefore food grade. The length of pipe, food grade too, 1 metre, was $2.85, I already had plenty of plastic cups, my spade bits, hole saw, drills etc. The actual job took about 30mins. The biggest job is getting time to get more buckets....so in effect is quite and easy excercise when you get the materials for the bucket. The just add your potting soil and fertilizer around the edge of the dirt at the top....easy peasy. Yep, like you, I am addicted to the idea having seen the slow but positive regeneration of my sad tomato.
