Backyard Farming the Natural Way

Here’s my two little devil’s Toby and Maggie trying to get into some mischief! Yeah, cats in the garden and around your plants can spell trouble but a little basic understanding and some helpful tips can go a long way towards keeping peace with the felines. First of all, most cats that dig around the garden are looking for a suitable place to ‘do their business.’ After all, no one has told them that the great outdoors is not a giant litter box!

If your own cat spends time outdoors, one thing you can do is make a suitable attractive area away from areas that you don’t want them. Plant some catnip, give them a little sandy spacious area to play in etc. Then you can plant and mulch the remaining areas so that (hopefully) they will gravitate towards their’s. For your very desirable plants for which you don’t want your cats around, you can spread a little cayenne pepper, citrus rinds, plant some Syrian rue (cats can’t stand the odor).

For intruder cats, Try spraying them with a hose and use other various other devices employing sound and or lights to deter them. There are also some predator urine and other cat repellents available commercially. One of my favorite devices for keeping all manner of animal pests away from ‘off limits’ area of my garden is the Scare Crow..
