Sungold, One of my Favorite Tomatoes!

sungold5-29.jpgI just had to brag a little bit on these wonderful cherry tomatoes. These guys consistently rank at the top in many tomato taste tests and I concur as to their taste. Currently I have two 5′ plants that are loaded with these tomatoes and I eat them like candy. They are certainly about the best tasting hybrids that I have found, and because the seeds are hard to find, I have snipped the growing shoots off a couple of these and transplanted a couple more plants.

Be aware that because they are hybrids, you cannot save the seeds and expect to get satisfactory results (like you can in open pollinated heirloom varieties). I have also found the plants to be outstanding in growth, structure, and disease resistance.

isiscluster.jpgHere is another wonderful cherry tomato that I am growing. It is an heirloom called Isis Candy and it is slightly more tart than the Sungold. The fruit is a little larger and the clusters do not form on alternating branches like the Sungold.  Additionally, it doesn’t seem to grow quite as large as the sungold but it is very productive and the tartness adds a little ‘twist’ in salads and other recipes.
