Seedlings and Planting Update
Pictured is a small section of plot in which I transplanted various “greens” seedlings one week ago (along with some seeds which I directly sowed which have just come up). Seen here are arugula, curly cress, and mustard greens - I featured the seed starting of these recently in the seed trials post using worm compost. I also planted a mixed lettuce variety.
These are now a little over a month old, and I have already been picking many of the larger leaves off of the curly cress and arugula. If you haven’t grown arugula, you don’t know what you are missing! I have many other vegetables which I planted not seen in this picture. There has been no synthetic fertilizer used anywhere in my garden.
Pictured here is a small sample of the many heirloom tomato seed varieties which I planted only one month ago! I also have an heirloom “bull nose” pepper thrown in. I used a worm compost mix and as can be seen, the results are excellent - especially considering the cool temperatures (I grew them outdoors). I will be putting these into the ground in the next couple of days.
I have about 20 total heirloom tomato seedlings and the varieties are Black Krim, Kellogg’s Breakfast, Anna Russian, Bloody Butcher, and Arkansas Traveler. I also have the excellent cherry varieties of Sunkist Gold and Isis Candy. Because I live in Florida, I am very exciting about the Arkansas Traveler because I understand it is a heavy producer and does very well in the heat. The Black Krim is also supposed to be good producer in the warm season. I have grown the sunkist gold cherry variety in the past and just can’t say enough about the taste and production.
I will be updating the blog as my planting experience progresses into the spring. Finally, I planted some artichokes seeds of the Emerald variety and I am very excited to see how they do with the worm castings and natural ingredients which I will grow them in. Till next time–
