How to Grow Peppers Anywhere

Growing anaheim and Bull peppersHere are some of my Anaheim peppers that have reached 2.5′ tall - and have peppers about 6″ long. These are the peppers commonly used to make chile reinos and can be used for other chile pepper recipes. They are medium heat, and will get hotter if allowed to redden.  I have these and other pepper varieties scattered throughout my property, and I am particularly found of the idea of growing plants in nursery pots and then burying them in various places around my yard.

The advantages in doing this with some plants are:  1) You can experiment with optimal conditions such as the amount of light or temperature in various spots.  2) The pots can be filled with very rich humus soil which will minimize the footprint required by the roots.  3) Root and weed intrusion by other plants is blocked by the container - and therefore you can plant along woodland areas such as I have done here.  4) The ground allows better moderation of temperature and moisture than containers in open air.  5) Plants can be moved in extreme weather conditions (I moved these peppers into semi shade because it gets so hot in Florida etc.). Also, make sure your pot size is sufficient to allow for maximum plant growth.

Heirloom bull pepperHere is an heirloom variety of sweet pepper that I grew from seed called “bull nose pepper.” It was popular in old America and was supposedly grown by Thomas Jefferson. It was one of the first medium size bell peppers and has a nice crunchy texture and fairly thin skin. I plan on saving seeds from some of these since I could only find two seed sources this past year and I hear that demand is rising faster than supply!

I was careful to move these far enough way from my tomato plants since members of the nightshade family can spread diseases to each other. Do your research before planting peppers and learn about their temperature and nutrient requirements. Also find out about the different pests which can affect them.
